Cat Diabetes is actually quite a common problem

Some studies show that 1 in 400 cats may suffer from diabetes.  However, other estimates put the figures a lot higher than that.  Most cats suffer from type 2 diabetes (the form of diabetes that is increasing in human obese populations).

Treatment of diabetic cats

Diabetes in cats is often fully treatable if caught early enough.  In type 2 cats, treatment can lead to diabetic remission, where the disease actually disappears.  In those cases, cats stop requiring insulin injections, so it is definitely worth catching this early.

In cases where it cannot be cured, cats will require insulin injections or pills.

Symptoms of Cat Diabetes

Symptoms in cats are similar to those in humans and come on over a period of weeks or months.

• Weight loss or gain
• Excessive thirst (cats can become obsessed with drinking and sources of water)
• Excessive urination
• Increased appetite (or no appetite at all)
• Dehydration
• An increasing weakness in the legs of cats meaning they become quite wobbly.

Test for Cat diabetes

Cat urine can be checked using keto/glucose strips or a blood sample taken from a prick in the ear can be checked with a pet glucometer.

Diet is one of the most important aspects in treating a cat with diabetes.  In many cases, diet can be effective on its own in treating the disease.
