Why do diabetics need special footware?

Diabetics can often have problems with extremities like hands and feet.  If footwear is too tight or rubs against the feet when walking, ulcers and other foot injuries can result.

Diabetic footwear manufacturers take the diabetics needs into account when designing their shoes, socks, insoles etc. Usually the footwear will be:

• Breathable so that moisture can escape..
• Extra room in the shoes so that the toes have a little more space.
• Wider designs so that you can use insoles (insert and remove when needed).
• Seamless so that your feet don't rub against anything that might chaff your skin.
• Stretchy so that your feet fit perfectly and the footwear doesn't move when you are walking.

NOTE: Be aware that feet may swell during the day, so make sure you pick shoes that acomodate this swelling.
