Why do diabetics need special shoes?

Diabetics can suffer a loss of sensation in the extremities like fingers and toes.  If shoes are too tight, ulcers and foot injuries can occur.  Specialist shoe manufacturers take the diabetics needs into account when designing their shoes, and typically, diabetic shoes have some or all of the following:

  • Made from a breathable material.
  • Extra toe room so that the toes are not squeezed.
  • Wide designs that can allow special insoles.
  • Nothing on the inside of the shoe to rub against the foot, eg. stitching and seams.
  • Stretchy or adjustable, allowing the shoe to fit the foot perfectly and preventing it moving (and rubbing) when walking.
